The Routing Transit Number, RTN, or simply, the Routing Number, is a MICR line feature of check printing that comprises both transit and institution data. The RTN is used primarily in the United States- Canada typically separates its routing data into two separate values using a MICR dash symbol. The purpose of the routing (transit and institution) data is to specify the the bank and branch number from which funds will be withdFor this reason, the term Transit Number most commonly refers to the Canadian MICR field illustrated below.

Other MICR fields include: Amount Field, Account Number Field, Transit Number Field, Institution Number Field and the Check Number field.
