The institution number is a unique code designed to identify the specific bank or financial institution from which funds will be drawn. In the American banking system this data is incorporated into the routing transit number. In the Canadian banking system the routing information is separated into institution numbers and transit numbers as per the image below.

Other MICR fields include: Amount Field, Account Number Field, Institution, Routing Transit Number and the Check Number field.
